Masi was replaced as F1 race director after a FIA review of the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP finale.

He had been under intense pressure due to his handling of the finale, namely for the Safety Car decisions that opened the door for Max Verstappen to pass Lewis Hamilton for a controversial race and title win.

Ahead of the 2022 season, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced a number of structural changes as part of a ‘step forward for Formula 1 refereeing’ which included Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas acting alternatively as F1’s race director. Masi was offered a new role within the FIA.
